02.03.2010 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW 2010 HONDA SHOWCASES ZERO EMISSION EXPERTISE WITH 3R-C AND EV-N CONCEPTS
Both, EV-N and 3R-C, build on Honda's vast working knowledge of battery electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles. Honda began producing the battery electric vehicle EV Plus in 1996 with the vehicles being leased to selected customers in the US. Since 1999 Honda has been selling petrol electric hybrid cars and in 2008 introduced the world's first production fuel cell electric vehicle, the FCX Clarity.
All of these vehicles utilise electric motors for propulsion and batteries to store power and it is this real-world production experience that Honda is bringing to its latest concept models. Honda's FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle uses a Lithium ion battery to store the energy from regenerative braking and Honda is currently enhancing its expertise in this area. Last-year a deal was signed with GS Yuasa to build a joint venture battery plant to produce Lithium ion battery packs for future Honda vehicles.
EV-N
The EV-N concept's four-seat interior makes use of the compact dimensions of the battery electric drivetrain, to maximise space and utility, without increasing the vehicles dimensions. The seats of the car have been produced in a mesh finish, which is both very light and easy to change, to make it easy to change the colour and style of the interior, quickly and easily. The interior has been designed in a deliberately minimal style, to reduce the weight of the vehicle, increasing range and performance.
3R-C
The 3R-C has a clear canopy that covers the driver's seat while it is parked and not in use. When the three wheel vehicle is in motion, the canopy becomes an enveloping wind-shield that provides the pilot, who sits low in the chassis, with significant protection.
The high sides of the safety shell seat give greater safety to the occupant, reducing the threat from side impacts and improving weather protection. In front of the driver is a lockable boot area, which gives significant secure storage for luggage or other items. The 3R-C's designers created a flexible cover that surrounds the upper torso to reduce exposure to bad weather and improving comfort.
The Honda CR-Z sporty hybrid coupe
The CR-Z‘s exterior styling is formed around a "one-motion wedge" concept with a low bonnet line and wide stance giving the car a confident, athletic look. Signature Honda design features, such as the split level rear glass hatch and aerodynamic, shallow raked roofline have been referenced in the design of the sleek coupe and then combined with a curvaceous and deeply sculpted exterior form.
The overall power output of the engine and IMA system is 124 PS and a healthy 174 Nm of torque. The peak torque figure is identical to that of the 1.8-litre Civic and arrives at just 1500 rpm, a level where previously only turbocharged engines deliver their maximum. Even with torque levels directly comparable with a Civic, the CR-Z emits 35 g/km** less CO2 than its conventionally powered cousin. Other harmful exhaust emissions are also very low and the Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack can be recycled through Honda dealers, at the end of the vehicle's life.
For the first time, a fuel efficient, low emission parallel hybrid system is combined with an ultra precise 6-speed manual gearbox. The manual gearbox is a core part of the driver engagement Honda's engineers wanted to bring to the CR-Z model. The flexibility of Honda's unique IMA parallel hybrid system allows it to be used with a range of transmissions, not just CVT-based gearboxes.
The manual transmission is complemented by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine, which is new to Europe and is a key component in the CR-Z's unique character. This powerful, yet efficient engine is based on the engine found in the Brazilian version of the Jazz. The eager to rev nature of the medium capacity engine, is enhanced by the additional 78 Nm of torque provided by the 14 PS electric motor, which is situated between the engine and transmission. The electric motor boosts torque at low and medium revs, which gives the CR-Z in-gear flexibility more usually associated with turbocharged engines.
To maximise driver choice and enhance the day to day driveability of the car, the CR-Z is fitted with a 3-Mode Drive System. This unique feature allows the driver to choose between three driving modes, which alter the responses of the throttle, steering, idle stop timing, climate control and the level of assistance provided by the IMA system. In developing this new facility, Honda allows the driver to adapt the car's settings to enjoy their favourite road, maximise economy, or strike a balance between the two.
When the CR-Z driver is away from the town or city and wanting to enjoy the open road, they can put the car into SPORT mode. This sharpens the throttle response, changes the behaviour of the IMA hybrid system to provide more electric motor assistance and increases the weight of the electric power steering.
Honda recognises that even the most enthusiastic driver may regularly experience heavy traffic, where maximising fuel economy is more desirable than the perfect line through a corner. In these situations ECON mode can be selected, which prioritises fuel economy in the operation of the drive-by-wire throttle, ECU, air conditioning and the hybrid system. . For those times when spirited driving is not possible or desirable, the Eco Assist function, in conjunction with the ECON mode, allows the driver to enjoy beating their best economy score on the way to work, or in heavy traffic.
At all other times the car can be run in NORMAL mode, which provides a balance between performance, economy and emissions and suits most driving situations.
Careful consideration was given to exhaust design to ensure that as well as being efficient, the CR-Z is a car that encourages the enthusiastic driver and sounds quite unlike any previous compact hybrid. Other components including engine mounts and sound deadening were tuned to ensure that the sporting elements of the exhaust were heard by the driver, but less desirable noises often associated with sports exhausts were attenuated. The exterior design of CR-Z deliberately evokes the iconic style of the 1980s CR-X, which was originally developed to provide a small, stylish car that could achieve spectacular economy. Signature features of the CR-X, like the split level rear glass hatch and low shallow raked roofline have been referenced in the design of the sleek coupe and then combined with a curvaceous and deeply sculpted exterior form.
The dashboard of the new coupe has a complex two-level construction, with a dark upper portion appearing to float above a light grey lower dash section, which continues into the centre of the inner door panels.
Equipment levels on the CR-Z are generous with all grades benefitting from six airbags, active headrests, Vehicle Stability Assist and Hill Start Assist. All CR-Zs will also come fitted with Climate Control, 6-speaker CD player, USB iPod® link and an engine start button. Middle and top grades benefit from leather seats, steering wheel audio controls and alloy pedals. Top grades gain Bluetooth® Hands Free Telephone controls, Cruise Control, Panoramic Glass Roof, HID lights and 240W high power audio system - including a boot mounted sub-woofer.
The stylish interior has a 2+2* layout, opening up the possibility of carrying smaller adults for short distances or children on longer journeys. The one-touch motion folding rear seats open up a flat floored cargo area, that gives a surprising 400 litres of cargo space, comparable to a C-segment hatchback. The flexible luggage area also has an under-boot area of 19 litres to stow additional cargo, or store items out of sight.
The chassis was an important factor in the development of the new car, with driver enjoyment being a core part of the design brief. The platform shares some components with the Jazz and Insight models, but the wheelbase, track width and set-up are all unique to the new hybrid. Overall the CR-Z has a 115 mm shorter wheelbase and is 295 mm shorter in overall length than the Insight, enhancing agility and reducing kerb weight by 44 kg compared to its 5-door, five-seat, family car cousin.
The CR-Z suspension features unique, spring and damper settings and the tolerances are also unique. One of the major detail changes is the adoption of a forged aluminium lower arm in the MacPherson strut front suspension to replace the Insight's pressed steel items. This reduces weight of each wishbone by 4 kg and also increases strength to cope with the wider track width and tyres.
* 2+2 configuration is only available in the EU and Japan.

The 2010 Honda Civic Range: Practicality and Style Personified
The Honda Civic has recently been refreshed to further enhance its offering of practicality and style that has won so many fans across Europe. The exciting wedge profile, coupe'esque body conceals a raft of measures designed to make the Civic one of the most practical and flexible vehicles in its class. The centre fuel tank layout combined with the innovative "Magic Seats" gives the Civic amazing load space with the seats up (485 litres) or down (1352 litres).
The Civic is available with five engines, the 1.3-litre i-VTEC IMA petrol, 1.4-litre i-VTEC petrol, 1.8-litre i-VTEC petrol, 2.2 i-CTDi Diesel and the 2.0-litre, i-VTEC engine for the Type R model. Each engine has been chosen to add a different dimension to the Civic range, starting with the most basic 100 PS 1.4 litre, right up to the performance honed 200 PS Type R engine.
Honda offers four transmissions on the Civic:
The i-SHIFT automated manual transmission comes in a single mode form for the 1.4 engine. The 1.8 litre Type S features a second sportier mode for more enthusiastic driving, giving the driver even greater control. Recently a 5-speed automatic gearbox has been added exclusively for the 5-door 1.8 litre model gearbox. The Civic Hybrid is fitted with a CVT gearbox, which can hold the engine at the optimum revs for fuel economy and emissions. With the addition of an automatic gearbox, the Civic range now has a complete range of transmissions, allowing customers unprecedented choice.
The highest performing car in the range the Civic Type R, now has a new to specification special edition version, which gains a Limited Slip Differential to further sharpen the car's handling. During testing the special edition Civic Type R was 1.44 seconds per lap quicker round the Japanese Tsukuba circuit than the standard Type R.
Special edition Type Rs are distinguished by their Championship White paint finish, which evokes memories of Honda's first F1 car in 1963. This iconic colour has never been offered on a Civic in the EU before and the new body colour is complimented by the Championship White 18" wheels fitted to the top Type R. To provide contrast to the white body, the special edition cars are fitted with a smoke chrome finish on the badges, door handles, fuel lid and front grille. The new range-topping Type R is equipped with an unchanged 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine, which produces 200PS at a spine tingling 8000rpm.
HONDA CIVIC 3-DOOR
HONDA CIVIC 5-DOOR
The 4-door Civic Hybrid The 4-door Honda Civic Hybrid will take its place alongside the 3 and 5-door models at the Geneva motor show. The Civic Hybrid sits above the Insight in the Honda hybrid line-up, and offers a unique blend of low exhaust emissions, including CO2, in a high-quality sedan package. This blend has been recognised by private drivers and corporate customers like British Airways and Eurostar. Honda now presents a broad range of cars fitted with its unique IMA parallel hybrid system, offering customers the family orientated Insight, the sporty CR-Z and the more luxurious Civic Hybrid.
The Civic Hybrid engine has a 3-stage i-VTEC system, which employs three hydraulic pathways to couple and uncouple five rocker arm assemblies. This proves three stages of valve control depending on the driving conditions to achieve a combination of responsive driving and fuel economy. During deceleration when the cylinders are idle, combustion in all four cylinders is halted and the cylinders are sealed shut, reducing pumping losses caused by engine aspiration for a 10% improvement in recovery of braking energy compared to the previous Civic IMA, where only three cylinders were shut. In the latest model, VCM (Variable Cylinder Management), the technology used to shut all four cylinders when only a little torque is required, during low speed cruising. In this mode the vehicle is powered by the electric motor only, with the pistons running idle.
CIVIC HYBRID
2010 Honda CR-V with Revised Styling and Diesel Automatic for the First Time
The i-DTEC engine, combined with an automatic transmission, has already been well received in the Accord model with the broad spread of torque complementing the Honda designed and manufactured automatic gearbox. The automatic gearbox has been slightly modified for its use in the CR-V to allow for the four wheel drive transmission and different usage of the vehicle.
To improve fuel economy, the automatic gearbox has been fitted with a transmission fluid heater to bring the ATF up to temperature more quickly after start-up, and reduce internal friction. For towing or other high load activities, an automatic transmission fluid cooler has been fitted to keep temperatures stable.
The i-DTEC engine gives a 10PS increase in engine power to 150PS and a 10Nm increase in torque to 350Nm, while reducing CO2 emissions*. Honda's latest diesel engine features an 1800-bar, 3rd generation Bosch common rail injection system to precisely meter the fuel. The new i-DTEC features a close-coupled particulate filter for a faster warm-up time, with a larger regeneration area to improve performance. The i-DTEC engine has significantly-reduced levels of NOx and particulates emissions and emits CO2 emissions of 171g/km (manual) and 195g/km (auto).
The frugal 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine will continue and now complies with the more stringent Euro-5 emissions regulations. This economical i-VTEC engine will be available with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed automatic transmission. Manual versions of the new CR-V will be fitted with a Shift Indicator Light (SIL), to assist customers in reducing their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Internal tests indicate that savings of up to 0.2 l/100km or 5g/km of CO2 may be achieved by following the instructions of the SIL system.
Exterior Styling
The new bumpers incorporate larger areas of body coloured paint and a re-contoured shape, which enhances the feeling of sophistication. Top grade models* also receive all body coloured bumpers, which highlight the lines of revised front and rear bodywork. The front grille now features a slimmer central bar either side of the "H" badge and is body coloured instead of the chrome finish of the current model.
Three new paint colours are available for 2010, Premium White Pearl, Urban Titanium and Alabaster Silver. Five other metallic paints are available - Crystal Black, Polished Metal, Sparkle Grey, Deep Bronze and Deep Sapphire Blue. Milano Red is the solid colour for the new model.
The new plastic trim panels are now more closely coordinated to enhance the ambience. Honda's designers have enhanced the passenger and boot area of the CR-V with new alloy sill and boot lip garnishes.
Each of the seat finishes has received changes to subtly alter the perception of the CR-V's high quality interior. The fabric seats now feature a new more stylish pattern and a revised material, while the Alcantara seats now feature leather side bolsters. On models equipped with leather seats, the stitching is now in a contrasting colour and on models with the ivory leather, the floor carpet colour has changed to brown to reduce the appearance of mud and dust. To complement these changes, the folding armrests on the driver and passenger seats have been increased in width to improve comfort.
The new CR-V features a revised audio system with the facility to connect iPods or other MP3 music devices on some grades. The USB connector for the system is discretely positioned in the upper glove box on the passenger side, negating the need for any wires or sockets to be on show.
The easy to use Bluetooth compatible HFT system has also seen upgrades to allow the export of numbers to the system when used with a compatible mobile phone. On grades equipped with satellite navigation, telephone numbers can also be dialled through a keypad displayed on the touch-screen display.
Honda's engineers have added a number of convenience features to the CR-V to further enhance its practicality. On top grade models*, engaging reverse gear causes the passenger side mirror to dip slightly to enhance the driver's view of the kerb or obstacles next to the vehicle. An automatically dimming rear view mirror, to enhance safety at night, is now also fitted.
Detail work has been done to further refine the CR-V's already impressive NVH performance, enhancing the relaxing, car-like driving experience of Honda's 4x4. Additional sound deadening, new isolators and revised seals are among the detail changes made to achieve a 5 dB drop in ambient cabin noise.

HONDA SHOWCASES ZERO EMISSION EXPERTISE WITH 3R-C AND EV-N CONCEPTS

Honda Accord Saloon and Tourer
The new engine retains its 2.2-litre capacity and gains its additional power with a revised turbo-charger housing, enlarged intercooler, stronger con-rods and a revised cylinder head. These modifications release the full potential of the critically acclaimed i-DTEC engine, allowing it to deliver excellent usable performance and good fuel economy.
As well as the significant increase in power this new model will gain new lower bumper sections, front chin spoiler, sill extensions, smoke chrome finished grille. The new model will be available in two new paint colours with White Pearl and Basque Red joining the current colour line up. Complimenting this suite of cosmetic changes will be clear indicator covers to further distinguish the new Type-S model. In addition, this model will be equipped with a new design of 18" alloy wheels, giving the Type-S a more sporting stance.
The broad spread of power and torque is perfectly matched to the 5-speed automatic box, which features the same straight gate layout with steering wheel mounted shifters as on the petrol automatic Accord.
